Karratha is the major centre for the Pilbara district in the north of Western Australia. The town was built in 1968 to service the mines that were established in the area in the 1940’s.
Prior to the town being built the area was a cattle station of the same name, but this was not the first time that the area was settled. Karratha and its surrounds have held a place of importance for many hundreds of years to the Aboriginal people of the area. Evidence of this can be found etched in the rocks and across the land. Rock carvings or petroglyphs can be found along the Jaburara Heritage trail This area is has the most prolific rock art in the world and indicated the importance of the area.
In Karratha you can learn more about the indigenous art of the Pilbara region. Yindi-barndi Aboriginal Art Group is a local community based group that takes visitors through the meanings of the paintings and the traditions of the art they produce.
