Hobart

Hobart is a city that revels in the natural beauties of its surrounding environment. The picturesque Derwent River on one side, MountWellington on the other, with its city centre minutes from the water front.

Hobart's architecture has generally been protected from the ravages of development and there are some spectacular heritage areas just a few minutes walk from the city centre. Strolling about around here, in areas like Franklin Square, Salamanca Place and Davey Street, you'll be able to appreciate the old- world atmosphere that survives in many parts across Tasmania today.

Just outside of Hobart are a host of daytrips you can indulge in. If sweet indulgence is something that's likely to get your heart racing then you need to visit the Cadbury Chocolate Factory where guided tours and chocolate samples go hand in hand. This little haven of chocolate paradise is a scenic 23 kilometres drive north of Hobart.

For a visual feast, why not try the view from the public gallery at Alpenrail, widely acknowledged as the largest and most realistic model train operation in Australia. A miniature Switzerland, the size of several houses, comes alive complete with alpine villages, Bernese Alps, and alp horns. Not to mention the star locomotive, Thomas the Tank Engine.

If toy trains don't capture your imagination, then why not wander down to South Hobart and visit Australia's oldest brewery? Like any good tour, Cascade Brewery offers samples. What you may not expect are the gorgeous gardens that surround the impressive old building. Also in South Hobart is the popular spot of Ferntree, which is close to MountWellington, and has all the trimmings of an enjoyable outdoors outing, picnic spots, walking trails, and beautiful views.

If outdoors adventures are your thing, you can't go past BrunyIsland, unless of course you have an aversion to beautiful, deserted beaches. Or you could go for a drive heading south along the coast through HuonValley to visit small towns like Franklin and Port Huon. Then there's always the pretty and rolling countryside to be had at MountFieldNational Park, or Port Arthur in the opposite direction with its dark history and old architecture.

If you find yourself in need of a car to help you take advantage of what this area has to offer, booking a car rental through Carhire.com.au will help you grab a great car rental Hobart deal.
