Move your car rental to the third largest island of Australia, discovered by Matthew Flinders and originally settled as a sealing colony. It was suggested as the capital of South Australia, before the site of Adelaide was chosen.
On the island the koala is an introduced species and these little grey cuties are everywhere. More importantly, hop in your car rental and learn why the island is a haven for the only pure strain of the Ligurian bee left in the world. Originally from Italy, these bees have found sanctuary on the island and a ban is placed on the importation of honey or bees. This will allow the strain to stay pure and the honey that is created by these bees is wonderful.
In Kingscote, the largest town on the island, you will find some of the feathered locals that come on shore before sunset for feeding. The pelicans have been fed by local tour guides for years and it's a wonderful opportunity to see these pied beauties up close.
Travelling to Kangaroo Island by Ferry
There are two deluxe vehicle and passenger ferries available between Cape Jervis, which usually takes about a two-hour trip from Adelaide on the Fleurieu Peninsula and Penneshaw KI. Both Cape Jervis and Penneshaw terminals are operated by the Kangaroo Island SeaLink. Reservations are needed as they only offer four departures each day with extra services during peak times. The travel time is as fast as 45 minutes. Take note that the mainland coach connections are available to and from Adelaide and Goolwa to Cape Jervis, while the island connections are available to and from Penneshaw to American River and Kingscote.
