The third largest island of Australia was discovered by Matthew Flinders and was originally settled as a sealing colony and was suggested as the capital of South Australia until the site of Adelaide was chosen.
On the island the Koala is an introduced species and these little grey cuties are all over the island. More importantly the island is a haven for the only pure strain of the Ligurian bee left in the world. Orginally from Italy these bees have found sanctuary on the island and a ban is placed on the importation of honey or bees. This will allow the strain to stay pure and the honey that is created by these bees is wonderful.
In Kingscote which is the largest town on the island you will find some of the feathered locals come into shore before sunset for feeding. The pelicans have been feed by local tour guides for years and it’s a wonderful opportunity to see these pied beauties up close.

As we continued to travel across the island we could see just what a perfect environment this was. Due to its location and isolation it is one of the most pristine environments in Australia. The air has no smog and is cleaned by the winds of “the Straight”. Big business and mass tourism have left the island alone which makes for a rare experience.

The next morning the alarm was set early to head down to meet the ferry in Port Jervis that would take us to Kangaroo Island. This was the first time to KI and I was getting more excited as the morning went on.
