Barcaldine is the location if the birth of the Australian Labour Party back in the late 1800’s. Its birth was sparked by the 1891 shearers strike in the town and its surrounds ending with the first Labour Party candidate Tommy Ryan being nominated.

The famous tree of Knowledge which was a meeting place for the unionist during the time was a 200 year old Ghost Gum was removed from the town after it was poisoned in 2006.
